Why you rank at the door and nowhere else
Most owners check Google Maps by searching their own business name from the shop. That’s the friendliest possible query, from the friendliest possible location. It is not how customers search.
Customers search a service plus a city, or a service with no city at all, from their house, car, or a neighboring commercial strip. Google then builds a local pack and a map based on relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance is not only 'how far from the pin.' The pack you see standing in the doorway is not the pack someone sees three neighborhoods over.
That’s why a neighborhood view of ranks matters more than a single screenshot. If you look strong on top of the address and weak everywhere people actually live, the listing is not fine. It is locally famous to itself.
The fix is not glamorous: categories and services that match real searches, a profile that stays active, reviews that mention what you sell, and a consistent name, address, and phone number. Rank Recast does that work every month and shows the geographic picture, not a vanity rank at the front door.
